Cleveland Rocks...sometimes

Well, as a follow to my previous post about the Cavs...Bill Livingston says it best.

The Browns' Kenny Wright was released today by the team after he was causing a disturbance in a police station parking lot! He also had two oz of weed on him. That guy just ended his pro career.

The Indians cannot win in Oakland. They've lost 17 of their last 22 there. Hopefully they can win two straight to finish this series strong. On a sidenote, Grady Sizemore owns the longest games played streak at 362, look out Cal!

The Arena league's Gladiators, the newest addition to Cleveland sports, are 3-1 and have a big game tonight against Dallas, who is 5-0 and in first in our division. That is, if anybody cares. On a sidenote, for a new team, there are no signs that we even have an arena team. Great job advertising Kosar!

Not really Cleveland, but the Buckeyes have proved that they are the best team Not In Tournament.

I don't need to explain how big last night was in my life, but any of you who know me, know full well that I shed a tear last night, then proceeded to get completely hammered. Huge, monster moment in the history of D.C. sports, and a monster lock as the #1 D.C. baseball moment — ever. And then there's this classic snippet, which on the replay is fantastic, because I was screaming the exact same thing as Zimmerman when he was watching it go out. (3:12 mark).

To my main point...

The Cavs are about to lose home court advantage in the Eastern conference playoffs. They have a VERY tough schedule to finish off the season, and personally, I would be surprised if they finished 4th in the lEast.

Everybody in Cleveland is hesitant right now. Because of one reason, Mike Brown. The guy cannot coach, flat out. We made a huge trade, and the same problems are still relevant. I know we've had some injury problems, but we are too deep to not be able to find an identity. There are now plenty of shooters around Lebron James. We now have a point guard. Those are the two things that EVERYBODY has been saying that the Cavs need. Now that we have them, Mike Brown is still shitting all over himself on the sideline trying to figure out some type of offensive scheme.

We need an offensive coordinator.

In the NBA, you hire a coach to coach a TEAM. Mike Brown has figured out how to take potentially one of the best players in history and make him underrated. How can Lebron James, at 30, 8, and 7, not be a shoe in for the MVP? If ANY other coach was here right now, the Cavs could/should be 20 games over .500.

I am drunk and ranting, just wanted to get this out there and see if anybody has an interest...

I will be laughing about this for months. The following is from The Sporting Blog, via Deadspin.

Who knows what lurks in the labyrinthine mind of basketball color man Bill Raftery? You do, thanks to some intrepid work by your reporter at the SEC Championship.

After a tornado gave the Georgia Dome a rude jostling, authorities announced that we should all stay put, then leave but not leave the building, and then finally suggested we leave in 15 minutes before the hounds were released. This also confirms a long standing argument between me and garry about whether or not Vitale or Raftery is the better color commentator. If Garry was cool, he would post the audio of that classic TSR argument on this very blog post.

While watching a movie on my computer the other day, I leaned my legs on an open dresser drawer for comfort. The drawer popped loudly, and I thought it was broken. I pulled the drawer out to reveal this drawing, which was from pre-1993, so I was around 10-11 years old. I say pre-93 because I remember that he was still playing when I drew that picture. It was a copy of a caricature of Eric Dickerson, which is why his proporions are WAY off. I've had the same desk/dresser set for years. Sometimes good things get carried along the way.

Cease (3:45 AM) - I just talked to Paulie and Killa on the phone for a good little time, and it was fantastic. I shall share points from the convo right now.

-- The Cavaliers are super sorry (all were in agreement, to an extent.) I stated that their overall talent level has gone down (lebron aside), and that Larry Hughes is super un-tradeable.

-- Paulie thinks that if Lebron james signed with a different team in the NBA in the near future, that it would be devastating for Cleveland and its entire sports persona. Fair point. Killa plainly disagreed, saying that the Browns and the Tribe would not suffer in a sans-thebron Cleveland. Another fair point.

-- I indicated that the Redskins coach hire is not a problem in my world. It was a little bit of an awkward setup, the whole 'hiring coordinators and interviewing everyone under the sun and having sleepovers with grown men coaching courtship process' thing aside..I'm fine with the coach. I think that QB coaches are the new it position coaches who will be handed head coach jobs, as of now, bc of Snyder taking that risk. [risk?] Danny boy is obviously putting a premium on developing Jason Campbell as a necessary step in developing the rest of the team.

-- Killa and Paulie both think that the Tribe could potentially make the World Series this year.

-- Terrell Pryor, the high school football kid, should obviously go to OSU in their opinion. I argued that the Big Buckeye Machine is scary to some kids. We'll see what happens. Paul thinks the kid is gonna be an NBA (yes) star most likely. Deion's name came up in the convo.

-- The Nationals (who I shall be covering this season..MONEY) love signing super sketchy dudes. That was part 1. This is part 2.

The Jason Garrett situation

I'm gonna get back to some old school straight up opinion.

I don't understand how Jason Garrett is still the o-coordinator of the Cowboys. If you're him, you have to walk into that office and say "Make me the coach, or I leave. End of story." You can't tell me that the Falcons, or Ravens, or (awkward) Redskins, or [insert bum sauce team here] job, isn't equally as good as say a Cowboys job two years down the line is.

Think about this. You walk, make money, learn how to coach a team on your own, and you don't have to do it with the pressure of being the Cowboys coach. If you fail, well then you should have never been the Cowboys coach to begin with. As far as I'm concerned, Garrett totally fucked himself on this one, by putting himself in a situation where the Cowboys are guaranteed to be worse off by the time he becomes the coach than they are now.

I am totally baffled by this situation.

I was reading through Chris Berman's 100 best highlights, and ran across Bo Jackson's 91 yard touchdown run in 1987. That guy was a monster, I had completely forgotten about him. I love the last fact below.

The toughest athlete of 2007 was Claire Markwardt, a high school cross-country runner from Ohio. Competing for Berkshire High in the state meet, she felt her left tibia crack about 200 meters from the finish line. She kept running. Then the tibia broke even more and she collapsed to the ground. She got up and tried to run again ... and then fell again as her left fibula snapped in half. So she crawled the rest of the way, in a gruesome episode captured on video

all lowercase, because i'm still not so excited about them this year. but, as i do every year for Christmas, i took gary z to the cavs/lakers game tonight. it's very rare to be able to see such high caliber players go head to head, which is why i am glad to say i was there. as good as those guys are to watch on tv, seeing them live in person blows that away.

on a sidenote, if you didn't catch lebron's sick move from last night's game against the knicks, here it is. note lebron dribbles the ball through his legs, from back to front. thank god for dvr, which allowed me to watch the replay about 6-7 times. pure excellence.

Besides "meh, tell us something we didn't already know," that is...

I can't help but think that the outing of Roger Clemens is the best to happen to Barry Bonds in since he signed moved west to San Fransisco. For the last seven years, all anyone's talked about is if this guy's accomplishments are tainted; should his records count; ew, look how his head has exploded; and all this other nonsense, totally disregarding that this guy was already the best player of our generation by the time he started creaming and clearing.

And yet, people are still debating whether Barry Bonds is a first ballot Hall of Famer; I've heard some talking heads exclaim that he shouldn't make it at all. It's blasphemous.

But now... are we going to keep Roger Clemens out as well? Perhaps the greatest pitcher to come along in the last 50 years? Of course not, we'll say. We can't discount the incredible pitcher he was in the 80s and 90s. And therein lies the catch. If we apply it Clemens, it must be applied to Bonds.

If he wasn't already, Barry Bonds is (once again) unequivocally a first ballot Hall of Famer. For all of the losers who were outed today, I happen to think that Bonds came out as the big winner.

Jimmy V classic

Two of the best deals in town are the Coaches for Cancer and Jimmy V classic. Two college bball games, usually with good teams, for only 10 bucks a ticket. Yesterday I went down to the Jimmy V to see the talked about match up between OJ Mayo and Derrick Rose of Memphis. Now I cant completely complaing because the game went into overtime, but I was thoroughly unimpressed with both freshman and their teams. I was expecting to see a Carmelo like performance where in crunch time the stars would take over the game but that never happened. While they both showed flashes of greatness, both have a long way to go from here. I know it is early in the season but I expected more from the hype.

Sidenote: Has anyone been watching Miami U's bball this year. They keep playing good teams tough (ie Louisville) and beat Xavier a ranked opponent. Plus Side Garry is their star player and he's actually pretty good.

Although I hate Michigan, I thought these were a pretty good couple of quotes about Llllllloyd Carrrrrrr. I personally hope he doesn't retire. It sounds like he is doing great things in Ann Arbor, especially for the fans in Columbus, keep it up coach!

Also, sorry Clinton, but this further proves Labo's comments from the beginning of this football season, 'Carr won't get fired, he'll be stepping down from his position, him and his wife do too much for that school.' Or something along those lines.

Since I had hunkered down on my couch, by myself, looking to watch what I thought was going to be at least a relatively hard fought football game, nevermind fun to watch, I have been sitting on my computer since noon wasting my time. What a fucking clunker.

Since I haven't exactly had much too focus on, I turned my attention otherwise, and I stumbled upon a string of sites I knew nothing about until today. Mind you, there is nothing particularly groundbreaking about this cluster, but as someone who has never seen a college football game from the stands, these sorts of things are intriguing as a mystery world that I know I pretty much missed out on. Newark, NJ

I went to the Devils-Rangers game in the new Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The same arena that Berry Melrose pretty much shitted on a couple of weeks ago. Now I had never dared walk outside the train station in Newark, which is pretty much the worst city in America, but was pleasantly suprised at how many cops they lined up between the train and the stadium. Once inside I have to say that the stadium is fuckin sweet. Theres a huge bar that you can hang out in and actually view the ice while you order a beer. There really isnt a bad seat in the house, a little cramped, but not bad.

The reason for the post however was the inclusion of New Jersey high school ice hockey jerseys they have hanging in the hallway. While you walk to your seat you can try to find your squads jersey hanging from the wall. It was pretty cool to see Hunterdon Centrals jersey hanging in a professional arena.

As I type this I am in the career services building in good ol Oxford while on a recruiting day for Cintas. I hung out with Berlin last night and he showed me quite possibly the funniest thing I've read in a long time (no offense to anyone on this blog, you are all talented and hillarious in your own right). Bottom line I couldn't MAKE this up!

As for the first story, I swear this wasn't me!!!

Male claims 'infringement' on his right to get Skyline

Oxford police officers reported at about midnight Friday a female subject on High Street yelling for her accompanying male to put her down. He appeared very intoxicated, and upon speaking to the female, officers found her to be calm and composed. She reportedly told officers that the male was her date and that he had been kicked out of her sorority formal earlier in the evening for being so intoxicated. He was identified as Miami senior John Plominski, and according to reports, while talking to officers, he sat down because he couldn't stand anymore. When instructed by the officers to head home, Plominski allegedly told them that he hadn't had his Skyline Chili yet. Officers continuously told him to go home because he was so intoxicated, but Plominski reportedly screamed that the officers were "infringing on (his) right to get Skyline." He was pulled away by the female and continued the offensive behavior. As he attempted to walk to Skyline Chili again, officers arrested Plominski for disorderly conduct/public intoxication. Reportedly, after officers put Plominski into the cruiser, he began to bang his head against the plexiglass window.

Miami senior Megan Wheeler called the Oxford Police Department at 2 a.m. Sunday morning regarding a near nude female trespassing on her 115 E. Walnut St. residence. When officers arrived, they reported finding a large group of 10-15 people attempting to get a female off the porch. She was reportedly not wearing pants and underwear, and her shirt was pulled up above her stomach. She allegedly told officers that she couldn't put clothes on because she had to go to the bathroom. When officers told her that she was indecently exposing herself, the female reportedly spread her legs and said, "Arrest me then," and urinated on the porch. Another female was reportedly yelling at the exposed female during the incident with slurred speech. She gave officers an ID that indicated that she was over the age of 21 and named Catherine. A female police officer arrived to help the exposed female, and she was identified as Amy Mueller, 24, and a former Miami student. The female with her then walked off the porch and disappeared. Mueller allegedly broke the back of a porch seat and became combative with the Oxford Life Squad when they arrived. At about 4:39 a.m., Oxford dispatch received a call from friends of Mueller. Officers reported finding the same female that was with Mueller at the time of the incident but wearing different clothes. She was the identified as Miami junior Julie Mueller, 20. She told officers that she ran from the porch because she was scared. Julie was cited with underage intoxication and possession of a fake ID. Amy Mueller was charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

Oh yea random sidenote.... I am interviewing Megan Wheeler (girl who called the cops) at 1:45!!! today!!!!

Totally non-sports related, but I saw American Gangster the other day, and it was a great fucking movie.

As for the movie, I had no idea it was based on a true story. I am a sucker for movies in this genre. I like watching realistic cinema, aka Transformers is way off my radar.

Denzel Washington turned in his usual great performance, and Russell Crowe, of whom I'm not a huge fan, played a great role as well. Go out and see this movie, well worth it.

The basketball season is coming, and if you're from Cleveland, you just know that the Browns' season will slide right through, without us knowing it even ended, and we'll be watching the Cavs barely squeak by teams causing every one of us near heart attacks. This is Cleveland sports, and you have to have a heart of stone to bear it. I now understand the old timer Cleveland fans when they say "the fan in me died a little more this year". I always thought, how could you not love watching sports, your team can't win all the time. Yea, well your team CAN lose all the time. It f'in hurts, over and over.

Which brings me to my point. I can't even bring myself to watch the World Series. I don't care who wins. Having a team make it that close and not get there just fucking sucks, flat out. Cease called me last night to discuss the rain situation during the game, but I wasn't even watching it. When I turned it on for two seconds to see what he was talking about, I checked the score, and swapped it back to some BS drag racing shit called 'pinks'. Not a bad show, not a good show, but about the only other remotely decent sports option.

Anybody know where I'm coming from? Maybe it's just because I'm from Cleveland, where once we hit the playoffs, we know something terrible is about to happy, very soon. And when it does, we fall off the deep end. Or at least I do.

I'm not a Tribe fan, so I don't have any real interest in discussing this outside of the fact that some of you guys are, but after last night, I am quite disappointed in the baserunning skills of one Kenny Lofton.

Say what you want about what that 3rd base coach was signaling, Kenny Lofton is a guy who should know when to run through a sign and when not to. Let me tell you something, there's a reason why people blow base running signs all the time in the bigs, it's because a lot of times they are right. The only reason Joel Skinner even thought about holding Lofton up, is because of the bone headed play Kenny made earlier in the game, trying to stretch a single into two bases for no reason.

I don't want to hear the crap about how his hand beat the tag etc. I realize this. But, in a very small percentage of the baseball world, (although to be fair this doesn't generally happen in the post season) — if a guy makes a risky play, and gets beat by the ball, he will get called out. It sucks, but that's why people don't do it. And that's a risk Joel Skinner didn't want to take twice, hence the hold up.

I can't tell you how stunned I was to see Kenny freaking Lofton hold on a stop sign when down a run in a game. Basic fundamentals in that situation tell you that if you're going to get thrown out at the plate, doing it with one out down a run is perfectly sensible time to take that risk. For the record, Joel Skinner is a career relative nobody who not only barely ever stole a base in his career, but never scored more than like 20 runs in a year in his career. In short, if Kenny Lofton had blown his sign and gone on to score, or get thrown out, the second guessing would have been far more lesser than with the option they chose to go to.

This is all notwitstanding the situation Lofton brewed up by getting into a jawing match with Josh Beckett — a situation that occurred when both players were on other teams — for reasons which still boggle my mind. You're choosing to re-hash and old beef that has nothing to do with anyone else in the stadium, in the middle of a playoff series? What the hell are you thinking? Such a lack of focus and psychological discipline was almost totally bizarre coming from a veteran like Lofton. I guess you could chalk it up to competitiveness, but that doesn't disqualify it from being stupid.

Joel Skinner had a momentary lapse in aggressiveness, which coupled with the momentum swing of the series, eventually cost his team Game 7. Kenny Lofton was the only man at the time who could have chosen to correct his own prior and his coach's current mistake, and simply elected not to. Bad move. Kenny Lofton hasn't just lost a step in pace, clearly his baseball acumen has taken a hit in the past few seasons as well.

Since I don't have too much to say about last night's game, I'll share a pic I got in an email. Thought it was great. I do want to say this though, why do the media, etc say that the bugs affected the Yankees play and helped the Indians? From what I recall, those bugs were all over Fausto in the top half of the following inning. He wasn't affected whatsoever and completed one of his best starts ever.

As for tonight, GO TRIBE! Fear Fausto, I hope he can continue his beautiful ways on the mound.

Even though the college football season is just now to the half way point, the hot seat is burning for several big time coaches. If off-season recruiting is my methodone, the coaching carousel my ritalin.

--Lloyd Carr has been on the hot seat since that fateful January day inside OSU's Nationwide Arena when the Vest began the countdown to The Game. Carr was 5-1 against Cooper, he's 1-5 against Tressel...yada yada yada...Appalachian State...USC in the Rose Bowl...worse home loss ever against Oregon...The appearance of the Big 10 having a slight down year could save Carr his job, should he manage to run the table. Otherwise former varsity letterman & Asst Coach Les Miles could be returning to Ann Arbor.

--Tommy Tuberbville has an Auburn record 5 straight W's against my beloved Tide, had a 13-0 season & returned War Eagle to national prominence. All that was wiped away in a single pen stroke when Nick Saban rolled back into the SEC. With the debacle that is Arkansas football (3 top players transferring, offensive coord leaving for Tulsa (?), & HC Houston Nutt's phone records being subpoenead by fans that job could be open and at first appeared to be the most likely for Tubbs. That is until Dennis Franchione at Texas A&M got blown out by a mediocre Miami team & then busted for distributing a newsletter with insider info to boosters for $1700 annually. With those credentials, Tuberville can pretty much pick his job & his terms.

--With Tubbs out at the Barn, look for dissatisfied Falcoln's coach Bob Petrino's name to appear on a short list. Remember a few years back (I believe it was the year before AU went 13-0 & were shut out of the BCS title game) Auburn's Univ President took a secret meeting with then Louiville HC Petrino about taking over the Barn's program. He may get the Coach he wanted after all.

--Phil Fulmer has National Championship to his credit but going 11-9 in your last 20 SEC HOME games is not going to cut it in Knoxville. A loss to UGA today could all but seal his fate. From Rollbamaroll.com: "One of our friends in the media advises us that SEC guru Scott Moore said on Steve Czaban's FOX Sports Radio show this morning that, if Tennessee loses to Georgia this weekend, Phil Fulmer won't be back in 2008 as coach of the Volunteers. If that happens, Moore said emphatically that the two primary candidates to replace him will be Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher. Though Gruden is most often linked at the college level to Notre Dame, his wife was a Tennessee cheerleader. This Tuesday, ESPN held a community forum/meeting about all things Mike Vick. Cease and I spoke about this last night, and both of us were extremely bothered by the thoughts many of the panelists and members of the crowd brought to the table. I got so fired up when I started watching it, that I started it over (yea DVR) and watched from the beginning, and TOOK NOTES.

My two cents:

-A gentleman from the Humane society stood up to speak, and was booed by the crowd, unreal. This was followed up by a comment from somebody on stage that said, I can't believe that you people would boo a man who can't be making that much money to help poor innocent animals. Not an exact quote, but you get the idea.

-Mike Paul, a reputation doctor, is a smart f'in man. If he has a book, I'll buy it. He spoke about rookies coming into camp, and the first thing they're taught is that things are different now. More in the spotlight, more criticized, etc. That is what you agree to when signing that contract. This was in response to comments such as the first two below.

-On a sidenote to that, an emailer sent in this, and I quote "Vick will walk away from this far easier than an average citizen. He is a felon and would never be welcomed back into the workplace if his profession wasn't football."
-Some random guy from Chicago

-Comments that bothered me:

-Terrance Mathis: Get off his back, this is our guy - yea your guy, who committed a felony, he deserves all the bullshit coming his way.

-Again: He's done so much for the BLACK people of Atlanta, don't criticize him so much. Which was followed up with, "he did a lot for the white people of Atlanta too."

-Terrell Owens: "It is human nature to kill animals. Men go out and hunt deer all the time." That's a great point T.O., but hunting deer and other wildlife is not a FELONY!

I can't go on any further, I'm am getting all fired up again.

I'll leave you with this quote from Mike Paul when asked about the improvement of Vick's image in the future:

"I'll start with this, image is fake. It's like an image in a pond, you can put your hand right through it. A reputation is built. It's built with truth, accountability, transparency, humility, and consistency. This is paramount to the rehabilitation of his reputation."

UNLV over #24 Hawaii - Although I don't know how much of an upset that is. That guy from Hawaii can friggin' throw the ball though.

'Bama over #16 Arkansas - Can Nick Saban get to 3-0? Pretty much just throwing that in there for the Cox family (and I semi think it can be done)

Washington over #10 Ohio State - Remember, I said possibly happening this weekend. Washington just ended the longest winning streak in the country, and it seems like Ty Willingham has found himself a solid QB.

And the complete longshot of the week - UCF over #6 Texas. UCF has this running back Kevin Smith who can run the hell out of the ball. He can also catch passes out of the backfield. This is what I have seen from him in one game.

Anybody have others? There's not much out there this week, but this may be fun throughout the season.

And, the patriots "might lose a draft pick" what a load of crap. Commish Goody Two Balls has really got his jock in a bunch figuring out what to do with all these hoodlums, convicts and now, cheaters. The league is coming apart at the seams. how do you end vicks career and come down hard on all these others and not tear apart the Team of the Decade? This should potentially be the biggest scandal in sports besides pine tar and pete rose. I dont know what I would do but at the least they should forfeit the game where they got caught. What do you do?

In other news, the Tribe is far enough in first to start making everyone wonder how they will manage another late season collapse. I'll end on a good (side)note, I want to rescind previous shit talk on Kenny Lofton, he is still my favorite indian besides Slider.

Ode to the Preseason

For eight more hours, football fans across the country can continue to live their lives brimming with unbridled optimism. Every team in the country (or at least those residing in the BCS conferences) is primed to win the National Championship, and 30 professional football teams all have their sights set on making it to the Super Bowl.

Is there a better feeling than this? That feeling you get when your team is still undefeated, before your heart gets ripped out of your chest because your team loses a totally winnable game? As much as I love Autumn's weekly grind that is football, I find myself even more excited for the buildup before the season starts. Because let's be honest here... unless you're a USC or Patriots fan, you really have no idea what's in store for your favorite teams. And that's what makes football the most beloved sport in all the land. I know the phrase has been overblown, but that doesn't change the fact that it rings true. On any given Saturday or Sunday, literally anything can happen.

Starting tonight, college and professional teams alike will begin falling off that pedestal, one by one, until early winter when we crown (God willing) a singular national champion and a Super Bowl champ. I know that none of my teams will be there at the end. And so all I can do is hope that this warm fuzzy feeling of excitement I currently have will last as long as possible.

Hope - that's really all that we have as fans, isn't it? I can't tell you how hard I'm pulling for Joey Harrington. Hoping that out of this entire Michael Vick fiasco, we're allowed to bear witness to one of the more miraculous comeback stories of all time. Hoping that Bobby Petrino's genius helps this one time golden quarterback to prove that he really was worth taking at #3. Is there really a football fan out there who wouldn't think it incredibly cool if the Falcons somehow made the playoffs? We know it won't happen. But with 10 days to go until kickoff, hope perseveres.

But how do we as fans deal with disappointment when that hope crashes down all around us and we're left with the devastating feelings of loss and sorrow? How am I supposed to cling to a hope when I know in my heart of hearts that my beloved Wolverines will lose at least one, and probably two games this season, with an offense that's as loaded as any team's in the country? Simply put, I can't. I find myself unable to fully enjoy the season. Rather, I live in a constant state of apprehension, hoping beyond hope that this week won't be the week that sucks the very life out of me. That I can rest easy for seven more days before that feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach manifests itself all over again.

Perhaps it's dealing with these annual disappointments that makes us stronger, that makes us all the more excited as the next season rolls around. Yes... America loves its football. But for 99% of the fans in this country, these feelings of excitement and optimism that we all share today are simply as good as it's gonna get.

THIS IS A MUST WATCH. Even if only for the side nicknames they throw on the characters. Quick primer: this is a video about the 11 different types of ballplayers you run into in a pickup bball game. So true, and so hilarious. This is so in Kyle's wheelhouse. Also, I would like to solicit other suggestions on these types. I will start with 4 of my personal favorites/I hate so much, after the video.

A few highlights:

#15 - 1992 Dream Team. Margin of victory: 43.8 points Closest game: 32 points.

#21 - Super Bowl XXIV 49ers 55 Broncos 10. I remember that game so clearly. It was a flat out beatdown. The Broncos didn't have a chance, scoring 10 points accidentally.

#33 - Roadrunner vs Wile E. Coyote

#38 - Ohio state getting their ass-kicked by Florida during the year 2007. I hate saying it, but those Florida teams were unbelievable. It was a great accomplishment, no matter who they played.

#46 - Here we go Brownies here we go ..

#64 - Fear the Cavs running up the score on the expansion team.

#68 - Jerry Rice vs NFL cornerbacks and safeties 1985-2004. Great way to put it.

#73 - Had to toss the Skins in there

#76 - Go Tribe! Again, doesn't matter the team, but a 22-0 shutout is damn impressive, especially when it's the Yankees with the goose egg.

My buddy Ryan and I built a scoreboard for the annual Muscular Dystrophy bocce tournament at his mother and step-father's house. His step-brother has MD and it's cool to have him around during the fundraiser, especially since he's cool as hell. They usually raise around $4000 each year.

The scoreboard for the last few years was a dry erase board that you could barely see. We built a 4'x 2' x 5' tall scoreboard for him to use. We built everything from scratch, and it took about 17-20 hours and $100. Well worth it. If I get some better pictures at the tournament today (this one was taken on my cell phone), I'll post them.

Since most of you have probably already seen the tremendous, although garden variety goal from Becks last night against my beloved United, I'm going to offer a quick primer. (Sidenote - the play-by-play guy in this clip is the United hometown guy, and his goal call of "It's in the net!" is, and has been my favorite goal call going on 12 years now.)

First of all, last night's Superliga game was one of the best games I have EVER seen between two MLS teams. And as many of you know, I have seen way too many. Secondly, goal and assist aside, the one shot that Perkins actually saved (click highlights, in the bottom right of the first flash screen) on Beck's second free kick was a better shot all around in my humble soccer opinion, even though it didn't go in. It's the last highlight of the clip, before he's subbed out.

Lastly, the challenge in which Becks picked up a yellow card, was a tremendous show of why he's a footballer for real, and all the celebrity stuff is really just that. He's a great fucking player. If you have 10 minutes of your time to block out today — watch this clip. It's worth it.

Ruthian or Faustian?

The home-run king was on a steady regimen of performance-altering illegal substances. No, not Barry Bonds, who whacked No. 756 Tuesday night in San Francisco. I'm talking here about Babe Ruth, whose years of home-run production coincided almost precisely with the years that Prohibition was in effect, during which the liquid portion of his diet consisted chiefly of beer, gin, scotch, rye and bourbon.

So should the Babe's record rate an asterisk, too? Seven hundred fourteen homers, a record possibly affected by a steady diet of what in lesser mortals would have been performance-depressing drugs of incontestable illegality. But for the wear and tear on his stomach lining, and the years he spent pitching rather than playing every day, and the fact that he played when seasons were 154 games, not the 162 they've consisted of since the '60s, he would have hit more.

That, of course, is not the reason a de facto asterisk will cling to Bonds's home-run record. Bonds's prodigious late-career power burst is the product of a bulked-up body and a time when a number of baseball's leading power hitters appeared to transform themselves through the dark magic of steroids.

But Bonds is no mere Mark McGwire, a power hitter turned superpower hitter by the abrupt accumulation of muscle mass. Bonds was plainly the best player in the game even before the bulking began. In his 2001 historical baseball abstract, which evaluated players through the 1999 season, historian-statistician Bill James ranked Bonds the 16th-greatest player ever -- the only active player among the top 25. Bonds, wrote James, was "certainly the most unappreciated superstar of my lifetime" and was by a huge margin the best player of the '90s.
That No. 16 ranking, wrote James, "is based on the assumption that his career ends with the 1999 season."

All this was before Bonds's power burst, before he started putting up seasonal numbers that rivaled Ruth at his best. James assumed that Bonds's career would continue for several years (Bonds was 35 in 1999); he most certainly did not assume that Bonds's greatest years were still ahead of him. On the basis of those calculations -- that Bonds would still have a number of great seasons, but nothing like the astonishing seasons he racked up in the early years of this decade -- James opined that Bonds might well end up "among the five greatest players in the history of the game."

So that, in the judgment of perhaps the most authoritative scholar the game has ever known, was the not-so-grim fate awaiting Bonds in baseball Valhalla. Yet, if we conclude that Bonds did then proceed to bulk up with steroids, it was not a fate that he would settle for. Maybe he bulked up only because he saw lesser players such as McGwire stealing his thunder or because the records he believed he might set would guarantee a still more lucrative future. Or maybe, just maybe, he bulked up because No. 5 wasn't good enough, because he could then have a shot at Ruth's seasonal records or Henry Aaron's lifetime home-run crown. Maybe he wanted to be No. 1, or at least give Ruth a run for his money as the greatest player in the history of the game.
These are not mutually exclusive hypotheses, and the only person who could sort them out for us -- Bonds himself -- is unlikely to do so. But if there's any truth to them, the story of Barry Bonds is less Ruthian than Faustian.

Bonds's tragedy, if that's the word for it, is that he lives on the brink of a Faustian time. The engineering of bodies, whether through drugs or genetics, is well underway, bringing in its train the potential for healthier lives and for ethical dilemmas we can scarcely imagine. Do we really think that 50 years hence, athletes' bodies won't be altered by methods that make today's steroids look primitive? And our ability to predict where science is headed is surely greater than our ability to predict where the laws regulating that science are headed. The only sure bet is that there will be athletes who avail themselves of that science regardless of the law -- just as there are today.

The steroids now in use, of course, not only strengthen bodies but break them down. And using banned substances when his opponents don't gives an athlete an unfair advantage. Bonds's decision to use steroids, if that is the decision he made, was deeply wrong. But Bonds's sins -- the questionable use of science, the raging drive to be No. 1 -- are, we should remember, distinctly sins of our time.

Under Armour gets it done

I love everything about Under Armour. I am not particularly talking about the specifics of the gear or what have you, but more so their whole setup, and how they've found their niche into the already saturated market of "high end" athletic gear.

First off, branding their initial uni roll-out with the Terps was a given, considering that their creator went to school in college park. That move alone gave them immediate cred, because they didn't botch that one bit, and the terps are one of the sharpest uniformed teams in the country.

What I am in love with though, as far as marketing schemes, is how they have managed to single handedly double brand their high school/college (whatever) sports promos, with what was originally derived from the same tagline. They just split it into two — and ran with it. I can't tell you how cool/smart I think this move is. Not to mention the commercials, on both sides are fucking great.

Most of you know my stance on sports and steroids, that being that the two combined don't bother me at all. But I just wanted to point out two things that I liked surrounding Bonds tying the record.

A) The guy Barry hit 755 off of, Clay Hensley was once suspended for failing a roids test when he was in the minors. Think about that.

B) Andruw Jones summed up the entire situation with this great quote. "There's a lot of people that take steroids, and they don't hit 755 home runs."
